Church Apostolos Varnavas

Church Apostolos Varnavas

The construction of the Settlement Refugee Self- Housing, made after 1974 to house the refugees, who fled to Derynia, created the need to construct the church to meet the needs of the Settlement and the wider region.

The first church was built with the help of the State and was dedicated to the founder and Patron saint of the Church of Cyprus, Apostle Barnabas. It consisted of a prefabricated building with a metal frame.

In February 1988 the church collapsed after a severe hailstorm that hit the area and in its place a new church was built as gambrel roof type with modern materials. It was also dedicated to the Apostle Barnabas.

In 2007 the church was extended to meet the needs of the residents of the parish. Vicar at the Church St Barnabas is father Eleftherios Eleftheriou, a refugee from the occupied Community Acheritou.
