Saint Modestos Church

Saint Modestos Church

It is located in the center of the municipality where it was built in the homonymous square early last century.

Saint Modestos was born in the early 4th century in Sivas city in Asia Minor. He was Archbishop of Jerusalem and is considered the patron of animals.

At the site where the church was built animal farmers placed the dirt of animals (manure) and when the animals fell  victim to a pandemic they built the church and dedicated it to St. Modestos to protect the animals. Inside the church the old "offerings" of believers consisting of wax figures of animals are kept.

The memory of the Saint is celebrated on December 16 with a large country fair. In Cyprus there are only 2-3 churches dedicated to St. Modestos.
