Road Block

Road Block

The Famagusta Avenue, the main and busy street that until 1974 used to connect Deryneia throughout the region Kokkinochoria to Famagusta, now ends at the Deryneia roadblock, which has become a symbol of struggle and resistance against the occupation.

Many anti-occupation events, peaceful and powerful marches and protests have taken place at the site of the road block since 1974.

In 1974 a large Peaceful March of Women with the participation of celebrity women from around the world ended at the Deryneia Road Block.

In February 1987 the Women’s Organisations of Famagusta held 20 days of events inside the tents manifesting their will to return to their city.

In August 1996 a large march of motorcyclists which started from Berlin ended at the Deryneia Road Block and lead to the tragic events and the death of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou caused by the brutality and the bullets of  members of the Turkish Nationalist Organisation “Gray Wolves” who had gathered in the area.
